Urban Myths about Sin –

Urban Legends/Myths have always fascinated me.  You maybe familiar with some from your childhood.  These stories are passed around and repeated so often, it gives them legitimacy.

Urban myths can develop in our spiritual lives as well.  These myths get passed around among Christians until they are believed to be truth.  We quote them so often, we never doubt their accuracy.  Let me mention three urban myths about sin.

1.  “I’m not a bad person.”

Have you ever heard, thought, or quoted this phrase.  It sounds something like this, “There are a lot of bad people in the world, but generally,  I’m a pretty good person when compared to some of the other sleaze bags out in the world.”

This is called grading yourself against the curve.  Back in college, I didn’t mind the teacher grading on a curve when I knew for certain a lot of people made a bad grade.

When we compare ourselves to others, especially really, really bad individuals, we grade our sin on a curve. Then it becomes easy to round our goodness up to the next category.  Then we wrongly conclude we are one of the good guys and are acceptable to the Lord.

This is sinner logic.  There have always been evil and wicked people around.  Most people appear less evil when compared to them.

The truth is “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”  (Jeremiah 17:9)  This means everyone’s heart is evil and wicked.

2. “All sin is the same.”

Why is this urban myth so commonly rehashed today? People recant this myth to justify their own sinfulness. This is once again, sinner logic.

Maybe you have heard someone say to you, “Hey Christian, who are you to judge me? You’re a sinner too, and my sin is no worse than your sin. All sin is the same.”

The truth is God’s word doesn’t say all sin is the same. We say “all sins are equally the same“, because we know that all sin breaks God’s heart.

Now all sin, regardless of the sin, brings us into judgment and leads to hell.  But, all sins are not the same.    Murder is not the same as lying.  A curse word is not the same a worshiping a false god.  Some sins bring greater punishment like some types obedience bring greater rewards.

3. “I’ve blown it, so I might as well continue sinning.”

What kind of logic is this?  Sinner Logic!  Always, the best course of action is to quit sinning, repent, and turn things around.

When we continue on in known sin, we only make matters worse for ourselves.  The longer we stay in sin, the web of deceit gets larger and more difficult to escape.

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. (II Peter 2:20)

The most miserable people in the world are not non-believers, but instead it is Christians living in known sin.  Sin is destructive because it is incredibly progressive in nature. It may begin seemingly inconsequential, but then it grows into a powerful force.

Unfortunately, people want to add Christ without subtracting sin. Real spiritual maturity is not just accumulating knowledge, but how obedient we are with the knowledge we are given. The problem for too many believers is we have been educated way beyond our level of obedience.

Do All Dogs Go to Heaven? (Humor)

This topic has been bantered about for years.  I am not going to solve it today.  There were two churches on opposite sides of the street that took polar opposite views on the matter.  They decided to air their differences on their church signs.  One church was Catholic and the other Presbyterian.  Only you can decide who won.

The Catholic Church started the disagreement with this innocent salvo...

Of course, the Presbyterians had to respond...

Now it becomes about God's Love verses God's Word

Now the disagreement gets... ruff!

The Catholics decided to push back by making it personal.

Presbyterians deny any Catholic magic on the issue

Catholics keep the faith

Somehow rocks enter the debate

No worries. Rocks converted too. Back where we started.

In case you’re wondering where I stand, I am not certain what the Father is going to do.  I lean towards the Lord opening up heaven to all animals.  I am comforted by the following verses out of Isaiah.

 “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.  Isaiah 11:6-9 (NKJV)

The Futility of Trying to Capture God

The Philistines finally got what they wanted, but they did not want what they got. When they finally captured the Israeli God (the Ark of the Covenant), they were plagued with rats, tumors, and confusion. Then some ne’er-do-well looked inside the Ark and 50,000 were slain. Picture Raiders of the Lost Ark for a moment. Their only logical conclusion;

“Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, so that it will not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly confusion throughout the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. 12 And the men who did not die were smitten with tumors and the cry of the city went up to heaven. (I Samuel 5:11-12)

God cannot be captured.

  • We cannot use someone else’s God or someone else’s spirituality.
  • We cannot use someone’s else’s prayer life to obtain victory.
  • We cannot use someone else’s Bible knowledge of God.
  • We cannot use someone else’s anointing of the Holy Spirit.
  • We cannot capture someone else’s power with God.
  • We cannot simply reproduce someone else’s revival.

We must make up our mind to pursue our own personal relationship with the Lord and adjust our lives to meet His righteous standards.

A pastor was talking about his denomination one day.  He said,

 “We are now in the fourth generation of our denomination.

  • The first generation generates.
  • The second generation motivates.
  • The third generation speculates.
  • The fourth generation dissipates.

Today, we must believe God to take us back to that first generation experience with God. This is the kind of revival we need.

In America we have people who believe they can possess a second-hand religion. We watch other people worship on television and hear others preach. Yet their message goes in our ears and out without reaching our hearts. We try to reproduce or manufacture what other churches are accomplishing.  Somehow we believe if we “copy” what others do, God automatically comes with the program.

These are all simple examples of people chasing after second-hand experiences.  If you try to capture somebody else’s God, you are asking for trouble. This is what the Philistines did and it proved fatal.

God doesn’t want us to chase the experience, the programs, or people.  The Lord wants you to seek Him and Him alone. We can’t capture God.  But if we seek Him with all our hearts, He will capture us.

Living and Praying Expectantly

Joshua was in a fierce battle.  While arrows were flying and swords were clashing, he dared to ask God for the impossible.  He prayed:

“O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon.” 13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, Until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies.” (Joshua 10:12-13)

I have to admit that asking God to stop the sun from moving across the sky is beyond my expectations.  I don’t want it to be this way.  I want to believe God for more.  How about you?

Can anyone imagine a greater prayer of foolishness or faith than this prayer of Joshua?   Please don’t get caught up in the fruitless speculation of how God stopped the sun. If the Lord could create the universe in the first place, we shouldn’t have difficulty in believing He could stop or slow the rotation of the earth, moon, and stars.

The fact is God did it!

How God accomplished this feat is not the point.  The Lord moved in such a fashion that it caused everyone to stand in awe.

“There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man.” (Joshua 10:14)

Do we dare to pray as boldly?

The only way we can dare to pray as boldly as Joshua is to pray in concert with God’s will.  Again, the easiest way to get heaven to move is to pray the prayer that originates in heaven.

“You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” (James 4:2-3)

As missionary William Carey headed off to India in the 1700s he said what ought to be our life slogan:

“Expect great things from God and attempt great things for God.”

  • What promises has Jesus given you about your future?
  • Are you still holding on to them?
  • Do you believe the Lord is building His kingdom with you in mind?
  • Do you need to get a FRESH picture today of God’s purposes for your life?
  • Do you see what God sees in you?

The Lord believes in you.  Start believing in Him.

How to Avoid Making Bad Decisions

Tags

, , , , , , ,

In Joshua 9 an interesting dilemma arose in Israel’s history.  A neighboring nation approached the Israelites disguised in order to make a treaty with them.  This nation, the Gibeonites, was afraid they would be destroyed just like Jericho. At first Joshua and the leadership were skeptical, but eventually bought the lies of the Gibeonites.  The Jews never sought the Lord, nor did they investigate the matter further.  They were deceived and had to live with the treaty.

We too can be deceived and be coerced into bad arrangements.  Maybe you are living with a few bad decisions that were not totally your own.  Joshua 9 gives us some helpful guidelines to avoid making bad decisions.

1. Keep asking the difficult questions until you get adequate answers .

Joshua asked the right questions.  Joshua asked, “How am I supposed to know you guys aren’t from around here?” (Joshua 9:7) He asked the hard question – he just didn’t stick with it until he got an answer. Unfortunately, people will lie to you.  Maybe you have found that to be true.

We do similar things. At first we have doubts about something, but in the course of the conversation we allow our attention to get diverted and our questions go unanswered.

2. Realize that compliments don’t make you more competent.

The answer Joshua received was an attempt to butter him up. The deceiving Gibeonites replied, “You are in authority – we are merely your humble servants.” (Joshua 9:8)

Sometimes compliments are sincere. Other times they are offered with a hidden agenda.

It’s easy to get off task when someone starts throwing compliments your way. Most of us are praised so seldom, when someone does compliment us… we eat it up.

The fact that people say we’re “wise” doesn’t actually mean that we’re about to make a wise decision.  Don’t get sidetracked just because someone is saying nice things to you.

3. Know that God’s Name being invoked is no guarantee.

This is a major weakness for a lot of Christians. We presume if the name of God comes up, then we definitely have a green light to go forward.

I wish I could say that is true, but the sad reality is that there are a lot of people who invoke the name of God while having other agendas. There are a lot of people who will talk about God while lying to your face.

Ever had a salesman start talking about Jesus when he/she finds out you are a Christian.  Enough said!

4. Always talk to God about it.

 “So the men of Israel took some of their provisions, and did not ask for the counsel of the LORD.” (Joshua 9:14)

This was, without a doubt, Israel’s greatest mistake. God would have given them insight if they had only asked.

Sometimes our prayer lives get so focused on people’s problems and needs, we forget to pray about the solution they really need.

I have to constantly remind myself, “pray the solution, not the problem.”  If I become “problem focused” I will never hear or believe God for the answer.

5. Understand that a “good offer” is not the same as a “God offer”.

“Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.” (Joshua 9:15)

The offer of peace seemed to be a good one. Why not take it if it’s a good offer?  Well, the fact that it was a good offer doesn’t mean it was what God wanted them to do. In fact, it was not God’s will at all.

At times “good deals” appeal to us because we are not deep in the Word and are not familiar enough with God’s will.  In fact, “God’s will” appears foreign when we are not “asking, seeking and knocking.”

This is because we have such low expectations of anything God might do for us that we’re quick to accept what the enemy offers.

6. Know that many bad decisions have consequences that God cannot magically erase.

The Israelites had to live with the treaty, even though it’s not God’s will. The die had been cast.

Yes, God can cause “all things to work together for good.”  But sometimes a lot of time may have to pass before things are good again.

Five Secrets for Getting Back on Track After A Defeat!

Tags

, , , , , ,

In Joshua 8, Joshua allows the Lord to organize victory out of his mistakes and failures.

When we make a mistake and suffer defeat, what we do next is of extreme importance.  We can live in that defeat or we can by God’s grace learn from it and move on to victory. Failure can be a backdoor to success if we are willing to seek the forgiveness of God and deal with our sin in the way God has prescribed.

Five Secrets for Getting Back on Track After A Defeat:

1. Remember God Never Forsakes His Children No Matter How They Fail Him

“Now the LORD said to Joshua: “Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed;…” (Joshua 8:1a)

After we have sinned and blown it, the enemy relishes to go into overdrive and whisper in our ear, “You messed up and God will never use you again.”

It was at such a moment in Joshua’s life following a humiliating defeat, in which God specifically reminded Joshua of his promise.  It is reassuring to understand that God does not permanently withdraw His blessings when we fail. The Lord is waiting for us to seek His face so He can remind us of His love and word.

What if God permanently withdrew His blessings/promises from our lives when we sinned or blew our obedience?   It is a sobering thought!  Praise the Lord, He is faithful.

2. We Need To Learn Not to Repeat the Same Mistakes

“ …take all the people of war with you,…” (Joshua 8:1b)

God’s word to Joshua was to use all of the fighting men of Israel, not just a select few. Though the primary cause of defeat at Ai was Achan’s sin.  A contributing factor was underestimating the enemy, overestimating themselves. and presuming upon the power of the Lord.

How often do we get in trouble because we make the same mistake twice?  To get on track we need to be willing to listen to God and obey fully.

3. We May Be Required To Return To The Scene Of An Earlier Defeat

“… and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. (2) And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it.” (Joshua 8:1c-2)

Joshua is told again to get up and return to the place of defeat.  This time the whole nation was in a right relationship with the Lord.  God promises to turn the place of defeat into a place of victory.

With the power of God a mighty city like Jericho could be taken. Without His blessing a little town like Ai could not be overthrown. Regardless of the endeavor, we are utterly dependent upon God’s blessing for any success!

4. We Need To Remember That The Recovery Of Lost Ground Is Always Painful And Costly.

 “… when they come out against us as at the first, that we shall flee before them. (6) For they will come out after us till we have drawn them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us as at the first.’” (Joshua 8:5-6)

The plan, as set out by the Lord, utilizes the Israelites’ previous defeat to their advantage.  If we allow Him, God is able to turn even the most humiliating mistakes in our lives to our ultimate good.

Romans 8:28 reminds “the Lord causes all things to work together (even mistakes) for good.”

This does not mean that we will not experience the negative effects of our failures.  Israel did and we will too. But God changed all of that for Israel and He can do it for us as well. He can turn our blunders into blessings.

5. We Need To Remember The Source Of Blessings

In Joshua 8:30-35 we read that Joshua built an altar, offered sacrifices, made another copy of the law, and then read it to the people.   Joshua did not celebrate with a victory march or a dazzling banquet. Instead he did a most unusual thing. In obedience to the command of Moses (Deut 27) Joshua had the people travel some 30 miles to the valley between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim.   He built an altar and carried out a renewal service in recognition that their success was entirely dependant on being obedient to God.

Our sources in Iran have confirmed to the ACLJ that Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani is still alive as of earlier today.

We still believe that his execution has been ordered, but it is clear that renewed international pressure on Iran for Pastor Youcef’s release is having an impact.

It is this immense pressure that continues to keep Pastor Youcef alive.

In less than one week, more than 145,000 people have signed our petition calling for Pastor Youcef’s release. Congress is taking action scheduling a vote as early as Wednesday on H.Res. 556 condemning Iran and calling for Pastor Youcef’s immediate release.

Just What Should We be Focusing On?

In the fifties the major discipline problems in our public schools were cigarette smoking, skipping class, running in the halls, spit balls, chewing gum, and whispering in class.

Today – the major problems are deadly weapons – kids carrying guns, knifes, and even assault weapons. This is followed by arson, drugs, vandalism, drunkenness, and teenage pregnancy.

Recently in Florida a high school teacher observed a number of boys in the corner of the gymnasium on their hands and knees. Rushing up to the boys, the teacher demanded, ” What are you doing?”

One of the boys looked up and answered, ” We’re shooting dice!”

The teacher responded with, ” Oh, thank goodness. I thought you were praying.”

Every day over:

  • 1,000 unwed teenage girls become mothers;
  • 1,106 teenage girls get abortions;
  • 4,219 teenagers contract sexually transmitted diseases;
  • 500 adolescents begin using drugs;
  • 1,000 adolescents begin drinking alcohol;
  • 135,000 kids bring guns or other weapons to school;
  • 3,610 teens are assaulted;
  • 80 are raped;
  • 2,200 teens drop out of high school; and
  • six teens commit suicide.

None of the above will make it in the news, but praying in school or talking about Jesus will make the news and get the student expelled.  What should really be the focus in school?

I’m just saying………

Pastor
