day and night are alike

Some of you are holding onto a promise – a spiritual promise given to you from revelation born from your time with God. Satan couldn’t stop you from birthing God’s seed. Battle over… right? No, the devil’s attack against your seed has only just begun. He wants you to get the jitters… that is to jump at the false completion or false fulfillment of that word.

Your are in good company! Jesus endured the same temptation and so will you. Just before He entered full-time ministry, the devil was given the opportunity to give Him the spiritual jitters.

5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,

‘He will command His angels concerning You’;

and

‘On their hands they will bear You up,
So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”  Matthew 4:5-6

Most people are instructed to dial 911 in case of emergency. Christians are told to do the same thing in a spiritual emergency… they are instructed to read Psalms 91:1. Guess who else knows Psalms 91? Yes, Satan quoted these emergency verses right in Jesus’ face.

Notice the devil didn’t quote to Jesus the next verse in Psalm 91… it is verse 13…

You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down. Psalm 91:13

Satan didn’t quote the remainder of these verses to Jesus… He knew them already and would soon apply them! Our victory is found in doing the same. The spiritual jitters are Satan’s temptation to get us to test God by suggesting to the Lord that He must move on our behalf. The truth is … God has not forgotten about you or His promises to you. He knows exactly where you are. None of us need to succumb to the temptation to strive against God’s word by attempting to help Him to move on our behalf. If God needs our help… He will tell us.

I encourage you today to hold on to your word… it is all you need in dark places. As Smith Wigglesworth says, “We want to get to a place where we are beyond trusting in ourselves.”

Pastor

What Has God Called You Lately?

Adam, believing God, believing God's word, Clint Eastwood, George Bernard Shaw quote, Gideon, God, Judges 6:10-12, mighty man of valor, names, names change us, preacher, word of healing, words change us

Man believes

I was reading an article on the impact names have upon us. You can read it here. I’ve read similar articles, so I don’t want to rehash old news, but names speak consciously and unconsciously. God knew this and knows this. One of Adam’s first jobs was to name the animals. On numerous occasions, the Lord changed people’s names to reflect their calling, destiny, or purpose. Sometimes, the Lord spoke prophetically into someone’s life to change their course and destiny. Gideon would be an example. The Lord called him a “mighty man of valor” long before any type of valor was present.

When God called me some 35 years ago, He called me a “preacher.” I can still hear the word. Yeah, I have seen the old Clint Eastwood movie, Pale Rider. It wasn’t like the movie and I didn’t shoot up a town of bad people. I digress… sorry. The point is … I have fulfilled that calling because the Lord spoke it. There is power in a name. There have been numerous times in counseling sessions when I pronounced a word of healing to someone suffering… via the Lord’s direction. I knew if I continued to stay the course and repeated that word of hope, it would eventually take hold. Why? Because names change us, words change us.

What has God spoken to you about lately?

  • It may be a corrective word.
  • It may be a word of hope or direction.
  • It might simply be a word of love.

Heaven’s words are not an accident. Allow those words to sink deep into your spirit and repeat them. The word will change you.

You need them. I need them. All God’s children need them. If you haven’t heard from the throne room in a while… slow down…get that word. Your destiny awaits.

Pastor

Rivers of Living Water

Dallas Willard quote, doctor praying, doubt, Feast of Tabernacles, God speaking, innermost being, John 7:37-38, skeptical, stupid as cabbage, understanding the Lord's voice, water flowing from the altar

stupid as a cabbage

Sometimes when I am reading the Bible I ask myself a question… “If I had been living in the time of the story would I have recognized its importance?  Would I have been one of those people who knew the truth about what was going on? Or would I have been just like most of the other knuckle-heads, who never truly understood what God or Jesus was doing?”

One day Jesus stood up and made an announcement…

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”  John 7:37-38

Jesus announced these words on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles. Every day a procession of priests carried water through the city up to temple. As they marched crowds followed, chanting Isaiah 12:3 and carrying tree branches.  When the procession arrived at the temple, the priest would climb the altar steps and pour the water onto the altar.  The crowd circled the priest and continued singing. On the seventh day of the festival, this procession took place seven times.

The crowds didn’t understand what Jesus was announcing this day and I don’t think I would have grasped the spiritual significance either. Even though no one understood what Jesus was doing or saying… He did it anyway. Amazing! Sometimes our obedience is just this… obedience. Zechariah and Ezekiel both had visions of rivers flowing from the temple in a miraculous display of God’s blessing (Ezekiel 47:1; Zechariah 14:8). On this day stood the source of living water and no one knew Him or understood His purpose.

If you had been living in Jerusalem or Israel during this time, do you think you would have understood what all this meant?  Do you think you would have comprehended how this ceremony pointed to the Messiah?  Would Jesus have looked like the “living water” you had been expecting?

This brings me to my point … everyday the Lord is speaking to each of us, especially to those of faith. Most of these messages come in small ways. In fact, unless we are discerning… we will miss it. If we are only expecting the big, loud, and explosive words, we will miss what God is communicating. If we are expecting the movements of God to only look, act, and manifest a certain way, God’s word will blow past us like a gentle wind.

I had a doctor in my church some years ago who had neglected spending time with the Lord. One summer day he was out in his yard attempting to poison weeds. While undertaking this loosing battle he looked down at his empty sprayer. It was called a “Spray Doctor.” But his sprayer had some of the letters scraped off… namely the “s, t, o, r”. As he rested, his sprayer spoke to him… “Pray Doc.” Coincidence or timely reminder? He realized the Lord’s voice.

What is the Lord attempting to say to you today?

Standing Still, Looking Sad

tumblr_mlu87ql0yJ1rzjvjio1_500

One day two of Jesus’ disciples were walking down the road towards Emmaus, when unbeknownst to them – Jesus approached and started traveling the road with them. All they could do was “stand still and look sad“, according to Luke 24:17.  Like my father used to say when I asked him what he and mother were doing, he would retort – “we are just sitting around looking ugly.”  These disciples were sadly moping around looking ugly.  Have you ever been in this place? Maybe you’re in this place right now.  As these two walked along, Jesus took the Scriptures and explained everything concerning Himself and what they had just witnessed.  All their “why” questions were answered as they strolled along to their destination.

My question is… Why didn’t Jesus do this in the beginning of His ministry? Why doesn’t He operate this way with us personally? Why doesn’t He tell us the “whys” before we go through trials, hardships, and the tribulations of life. I sure could have used more information ahead of time!

The key to understanding this is found in verse 25… Jesus called these two “foolish and slow of heart to believe.” Hey, this is harsh – but the truth.  Jesus is not really calling them foolish, but dull… dull in perceiving or arriving at the truth.  But the word slow means the same thing as it does in English. Someone who takes a loooong time to believe or to arrive at the correct conclusion.  Most of the time we accuse God of being slow, but the actual truth is most of the time, if not all of the time… He is waiting for us to come around to truth.

So… if we can barely handle and understand the truth at the end of our difficulties and hardships, how can we ever fully understand or comprehend what God is doing from the beginning.  As Jack so elegantly put it… “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!”

These two confessed later of the encounter…

Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us? Luke 24:32

This type of burning is what we all need to feel and experience. It is when God brings the truth of Scripture alive in our present day experience. Until this happens we will just “stand still and look sad.”  Not only do you need to hear the voice of the Lord today, but tomorrow,  the next day and the next.  Take some time to allow the Lord’s voice and truth to burn in your heart.  It will change your life.

Blessings,

Pastor

Being Receptive to God’s Voice

a blessed life, Charles Stanley quote, hear and obey, leads to obedience, light, Luke 11:28, personal obedience, real spiritual discernment, rock, rubbing shoulders with spiritual giants, shaped and molded by His truth, soil, spiritual discernment, spiritual giants

In the Process

“Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.” Luke 11:28

According to Jesus a blessed life is one which hears from heaven and obeys. Revelation always demands a response — you can’t be neutral, unaffected or indifferent. When Jesus spoke or performed a miracle, the people around responded with general amazement .. “How could this Man do this?” Some even attributed His power to Satan. Others were more guarded and demanded another sign from Him. Jesus called these types of seekers “wicked and unbelieving.”

Many of the people hanging around Jesus’ ministry showed no evidence of real spiritual discernment … the type of understanding which leads to obedience. Discernment isn’t really discernment unless it leads to obedience. Most people I know like to think of themselves as discerning individuals. In reality, if we are not obedient to God’s word, then we are not discerning at all.

I believe many people attend church, conferences, and other spiritual meetings searching for hidden truths which might give them spiritual insight and power. Jesus reminds us the secret is not found in rubbing shoulders with spiritual giants, but in simple obedience to the truths you already know. In fact, if we neglect our own personal obedience, then our last state is worse than our first!

The Bible repeats this simple theme many times in many different pictures because we need to hear it. We are called to build our house upon the rock, be good soil, be light in dark places, and repent.

The Lord is speaking to each of us today. The only question is whether or not our heart is ready to receive His revelation in total obedience.

Blessings,

Pastor

The Humble Planter

29 Thursday Nov 2012

Alex Haley, biblically obedient, born to loose, He had help, hearing only clubs, humble stature, humility, James 1:21, John Wimber quote, Norman Vincent Peale, reach our destination, roots, roots are partially grown words, seeds are words in their infancy, shelf life on God's word is limited, tattoo, tattoo on mind, the word implanted, turtle on a fence post, words sometimes come to us as seed or roots

“In humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James 1:21

  • It takes humility to accept a Gospel message which says you are a no good sinner.
  • It takes humility to openly receive a message which says you need to be told how to live your life.
  • It takes humility to accept counsel which tells you need to change your attitudes, your ways of thinking, your speech, and your behavior.

The Humble Planter begins their journey willing to accept instruction, correction, and reproof found in the Word. I really can’t say enough about this issue. In the Kingdom the person with a humble stature stands heads and shoulders upon the rest. This believer will receive the most and be in a position of favor. The tough part is remaining in this place.

Alex Haley, the author of “Roots,” had an unusual picture hanging on his office wall. It was a picture of a turtle on top of a fence post. When asked, “Why was the picture resting in such a prominent place?” Alex Haley answered, “Every time I write something significant, every time I read my words and think that they are wonderful… and begin to feel proud of myself… I look at the turtle on top of the fence post and remember that the turtle didn’t get there on his own. He had help.”

Without God’s help… we will not reach our destination either! We need the Lord in the beginning, the middle, and at the end of our journey.

James doesn’t stop with humility. James says, “Receive the word implanted.” What does he mean? Why are we to implant? Implant means to engraft the word. Sometimes words come to us as seeds and sometimes they arrive to us as roots!

I’ve seen my mother and my wife root certain plants in a glasses of water. When the roots begin to grow they “implanted” them quickly in fresh dirt. We like to use the word “transplant” when speaking today. The larger question is why does God talk about the word being “seeds” in one passage and words needing to be “implanted” in other passages?

In essence, they both are the same. The difference is in how they arrive to us personally. Seed words are in their infancy. When words come to us as roots they are already partially grown. The important issue is that those words from heaven find a home in our heart, mind, and soul.

When I was a new believer every word of God seemed to come to me in “seed” form. I was definitely a greenhorn Christian. Everything the Lord did in my life was brand new. Sometimes the Lord had to reissue those seeds because I wasn’t faithful with them. I have been a believer now for over thirty-six years. In my youth some teachings took a long time before they took root. Now, many things the Lord teaches me arrive in roots. He knows I will be more faithful with His precious truths.

Again, the big difference is not found in the root or seed… it is in what we do with God’s word. God knows in order for us to act and obey on His word… we must implant those words quickly, while they still have an opportunity to grow. The shelf life on God’s word is limited. As I have written before, the word will be stolen, choked, or starved out if we do not get them into our hearts and minds.

The fact is: if you don’t implant the Word, you won’t be doers of the Word. You will join one of those “Hearer Only Clubs“. We have enough of those people packing the pews today. They know plenty but act very little.

Norman Vincent Peale tells the story of walking through the twisted little streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong. He said, “I came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were displayed samples of the tattoos available. On the chest or arms you could have tattooed an anchor or flag or mermaid or whatever. But what struck me with force were three words that could be tattooed on one’s flesh, “Born to Lose.”

I entered the shop in astonishment and, pointing to those words, asked the Chinese tattoo artist, “Does anyone really have that terrible phrase, Born to lose, tattooed on his body?”  He replied, “Yes, sometimes.”  “But,” I said, “I just can’t believe that anyone in his right mind would do that.”

The Chinese man simply tapped his forehead and said in broken English, “Before tattoo on body, tattoo on mind.”

Everyday something or some words are being tattooed on your mind and heart. The only question is what are you allowing to be tattooed in your most holiest of places. Our Heavenly Father wants to tattoo the best of His words on your heart and mind. He is sending His seeds and roots your way. The only question is are you allowing this process to happen? Agree with King David and say… “Thy word I have treasured in my heart.”

Blessings,

Pastor

Faith Fusion

act on it, believing God's word absolutely, bluebonnet, complete trust, do not touch, Elizabeth Rice Handford quote, fail to reach the promised land, God's word united with faith, Hebrews 4:2, I Thessalonians 2:13, museum sign, our best interest to take God at His word, receive God's word, smothered in faith, united our hearing with faith, wash hands after touching

Have your ears been fused with faith? According to the Bible, it is imperative we unite our hearing the Lord with faith.

For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.”  Hebrews 4:2

The writer of Hebrews is alluding to the Israelites whom God delivered from Egyptian slavery. In just a few short weeks, He led them to Sinai and gave them His word. Unfortunately, the people did not received God’s word and ultimately failed to reach the Promised Land. The word did not profit the people.

We are now in a similar situation. God has delivered us from the kingdom of Satan and slavery to sin. He has given us His Word. We have received in that Word the good news that if we trust and obey, we will reach the spiritual ‘promised land’ – heaven. On the other hand, we have been told that should we fail to trust and obey, we will never reach heaven.

We experience “faith fusion” when the words God speaks to us is united with faith causing us to believe whatever He speaks. When we neglect to unite God’s word with faith we miss inheriting the promises of God.

Why do so many fail at this point? It is because they do not receive God’s word with faith. In other words, they do not believe God meant what He said. They do not believe the Word absolutely. They do not take God’s word seriously enough to allow it to influence their hearts and their minds.

There is an old commercial which says, “Everything is better with Bluebonnet on it.” Bluebonnet is a butter-like margarine.  Every word of God is better when smothered in faith. We need to realize that hearing the Word or reading the Word will not profit our lives unless we believe what we hear and read. We will derive no advantages or blessings from the Word unless we place our complete trust and confidence in it. Listen to 1 Thessalonians 2:13,

“And for this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God’s message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.”

Faith says – ‘I believe what I am hearing to be true and because I believe it to be true I will begin to act on it.’

How we can know if someone is receiving the Word with faith? You will see them acting upon the Word. Faith naturally leads to obedience. Faith doesn’t wait for full understanding or perfect timing… faith acts!

Despite the “Do Not Touch” signs, a museum was having no success in keeping patrons from touching–and soiling–priceless furniture and art. But the problem evaporated overnight when a clever museum employee replaced the signs with ones that read: “Caution: Wash Hands After Touching!”

When people finally discover it is in their best interest to obey… they do! It is in our best interest to take God at His word. If you are going to read the Bible, listen to the Holy Spirit and follow Jesus’ teachings, then purpose to fuse the words you receive with faith. It will change your life and please the Lord.

Blessings,

Pastor

The Hungry Hearer

27 Tuesday Nov 2012

accepted so we serve, baby, be careful how we hear, evidence of conversion, feed the need, feed yourself, I Peter 2:2, instinctively hungers for milk, It is a thankless job, long for pure milk of the word, loved so we follow, malnourished, Neil Anderson quote, PTA, secret closet issues, shift from adolescent to adulthood, stay-at-home-mom, staying hungry, warm fuzzies

Jesus encouraged us to “be careful how we hear.” One way to combat this is to be a hungry hearer. Being hungry for God should be a natural state for every believer. It starts immediately after coming into real faith. Listen to Peter’s words,

Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.” 1 Peter 2:2

A healthy baby instinctively hungers for milk and demands it often. Late night feedings are a common occurrence for parents. If that baby does not feed on milk, it will quickly become malnourished. Its development will be diminished.

There is nothing wrong with a young believer being hungry. Staying hungry and becoming malnourished is another issue. Hunger for the things of God and a desire to feed yourself with His Word is evidence of conversion and spiritual vitality.  No matter where a child of God grows in spiritual development or stages of growth, there should be a hunger for God and His word.

A stay-at-home mom went to a PTA meeting one night. While she was gone, her husband and oldest daughter decided they would clean the kitchen for mom and surprise her when she got home. Well, they washed all the dishes, put away the pots and pans, cleaned the stove and counter-tops — the kitchen was spotless…

Later than night, mom came home from the meeting… she walked into the kitchen and fixed herself something to drink and then went into the den to watch TV with her family… but she never said a word about the kitchen being cleaned.

Finally, her husband said, “Honey, did you notice the clean kitchen?”

“I did,” she said

“Well, you’re not going to say thank you or anything?”

She said, “Why should I? It’s a thankless job, isn’t it?”

Assuring that you eat and drink your spiritual food is your job. No one is going to know whether you have fed yourself, except you. It is one of those “secret closet” issues like prayer. No need to post on Facebook every time you feed yourself. No one really cares and no one is going to pat you on the back. Right?

Let me also say you are not always going to experience “warm fuzzies”  every time you meet with God. Yes, infants and little children get all excited at meal time. Parents know to make their feeding time fun. Eventually, the fun and games end and a child learns to fed themselves. Some believers never learn to shift from adolescence into adulthood. If you don’t believe me, look at church life. We coddle and coddle young people. As they shift from teens to adults, the dropout rate is staggering. No need to go into all this right now, except to say … feed the need! Keep yourself hungry and keep yourself fed. It is a good thing!

Blessings,

Pastor

Be Careful HOW You Hear!

a word to advance, accountable for the word, false assumption, fear is a prison, lose ground, Luke 8:18-21, military discipline, refuse to obey orders, Sinclair Ferguson quote, spiritually go backwards, take it or leave it, with great hearing comes great responsibility

18 So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him. Luke 8:18-21

When I was a kid and making a trade with one of my friends, eventually one of us would say, “take it or leave it.” This meant negotiations were now closed and a decision had to be made. Have you ever uttered that phrase? Jesus is basically making the same argument. He said once we hear the word, we become accountable for that same word. We take it or leave it. If we hear the Word and make good use of it, we shall benefit from it and the opportunity for greater knowledge and grace will follow. If we hear the Word and do not make good use of it, we will not benefit from the Word we hear and will lose some of the knowledge of God we now enjoy. Spiritually, we go backwards rather than forwards. Ouch!

In the Kingdom, if you are given a word to advance in a certain area, but neglect to do so… you don’t stay where you are, you go backwards. You, in effect, lose ground. We need to remember that losing ground to the enemy is one issue. Losing ground because of neglect or disobedience is another. Most believers are under the false assumption that God would never take away from them personally. In other words, God would never remove blessings. But according to Jesus, we can lose ground and it is not the devil’s fault, it is not the fault of others… IT IS OUR OWN FAULT.

Any military leader knows if someone under their command refuses to obey orders… that individual must be stripped of rank and re-educated on military discipline. Those in the infantry, even officers, must obey commands. If not, chaos will ensue and nothing will be accomplished.

The same is true of the Kingdom. Believers will call their missteps and neglect something other than disobedience.  But when it comes down to it, they simply didn’t obey the Lord’s command. This is why we must listen to the Lord’s word with the intent to obey. This is why Jesus says, “Be very careful how you hear.” I will rewrite a famous line from Spiderman … “With great hearing comes great responsibility.”

A doctor went to a party one night and saw one of his patients out on the dance floor with a beautiful woman. The doctor went up to his patient and asked, “What are you doing?” The patient responded, “I’m just following your advice!” “What advice?,” the doctor replied. “You told me to find a hot mama and be cheerful.” The doctor responded in disbelief, “That’s not what I said. What I said to you was that you had a heart murmur and you need to be careful.”

We are not afforded the opportunity to see and hear what we want to hear and forget (or rewrite) the rest. The Lord requires us to “trust and obey… for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

Blessings,

Pastor

Are You Ready for Fresh Revelation from the Lord?

"I AM God Almighty, apostles creed, El-Shaddai, Genesis 17:1, God, is anything too hard for the LORD?, live by faith, precious revelation, show up, the God who is sufficient, Tozer Quote

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1)

After thirteen years of silence, God appeared to Abraham and said, “I AM God Almighty.” In Hebrew, the name was “El-Shaddai,” which essentially meant “the God who is sufficient” and was used to emphasize His infinite power.  It was the first time  God had been called by this name in scripture.

How mighty was He? What could He do? The “proof” of Abraham’s faith and Sarah’s faith was just a year away.  They had been waiting for 24 years.  In the very next chapter God again promised the son and fixed the time for his arrival.  The angel said to Sarah and Abraham, “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:14)

This was an excellent question to ask. “Is anything too hard for God?” The answer was and is, of course, no! He is El-Shaddai, Almighty God.

If we are going to live by faith and receive the precious promises of God, then we are going to have to ask and answer the same question… “Is there anything too hard for God?”  If you do not take the time to work through this issue, then it becomes impossible to move forward in faith.

A children’s catechism class was learning the Apostles’ Creed. Each child had been assigned a sentence to repeat. The first one said, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” The second child said, “I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son…” When he had completed his sentence, there was an embarrassing silence. Finally, one child piped up, “Teacher, the boy who believes in the Holy Spirit isn’t here.”  Oooops!

Abraham, the “Father of many nations“, had finally shown himself a true believer. God needed a man to believe He was El-Shaddai, God Almighty. Now Abraham was finally at the point in his life where he could believe and receive this fresh revelation of God. Maybe there was an angel in heaven who shouted, “Father, the man you called out of Ur is finally here and ready to fully believe.”   God wants to give you a fresh revelation of Himself.  The only question is … Are you ready to receive it?  Are you at the place in your life where you can grasp and go with God’s revelation without forgetting and losing that precious revelation?  A lot of people say with their lips they want to do something great and grand for the Lord.  I hear it all the time.  If you and I were ready, we would be receiving God’s revelation of Himself.  The time has come where we desperately need to empty ourselves of everything in our lives not of the Lord, so that we might receive the full revelation of the Lord.  Nothing is impossible with the Lord.  We simply have to show up and believe.

Blessings,

Pastor
