A W Tozer - Quote

A lot of folks get a little melancholy around Christmas time. Thinking about Christmas’ past makes them get a little whimsical. Nothing wrong with this as long as you don’t stay in that place.

Christmas always reminds me that a new year is coming. It is a fresh opportunity to start new… to get a fresh word from heaven… to get new revelation and relevant marching orders for the new year. I don’t want to be stuck in Christmas past. I want to live in Christmas present with hope in Christmas future.

Don’t get me wrong… I believe we should learn from the past. But when you hear believers constantly chirping about the past…”what God did” or “how the Lord used to move” …. It is easy to get stuck worshiping, talking, and focusing upon what God did yesteryear. We must remind ourselves that our God is the great “I Am“!

  • I don’t want to only read about Noah, I want to be Noah in my generation.
  • I don’t want to only study about Abraham, I want to be a “Father of Faith” to my generation.
  • I don’t want to simply admire Kind David, I want to be a “Warrior of Worship” to my generation.
  • I don’t want to just marvel the prophet Elijah, I want to walk in that same power in my generation.

When we get stuck in the past, we only examine “What God did.” We lose focus on “what God is doing right now.” I love hearing stories about evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and saints of old. They inspire me. But, what about today…isn’t God doing anything fresh and relevant now?

Yes! He is for those willing to get their head and spirit out of Christmas past. The hardcore faith of Noah, Abraham, and others is still available to each and every believer willing to seek the Lord for a fresh revelation. Stop saying, “I wish I had so-and-so’s faith.” Allow the Lord to speak into your “now”. The Lord will speak and move if you are looking for Him in your present.

All this reminds me of the young nun who was on a much desired mission assignment to the Apache Indians. She was so excited that she drove past the last gas station without noticing she needed gas. She ran out of gas just a mile down the road and had to walk back to the station. The attendant told her he would like to help her, but he had no container to hold the gasoline.

Sympathetic to her plight, he agreed to search through an old shed in the back for something that might suffice. The only container which would hold fuel was an old bedpan. Not to be detained any longer, the grateful nun told him the bedpan would work just fine. She carried the gasoline back to her car, taking care not to drop an ounce. When she got to her car, she carefully poured the contents of the bedpan into the tank.

A truck driver pulled alongside and noticed the care given as the nun was emptying the container into the tank. He rolled down his window and yelled to her, “I wish I had your faith, Sister!

See, you don’t need someone else’s faith. I believe the Lord has a fresh word for you today. This word will change your life and those around you. Maybe you will be the one we all will be telling stories about next Christmas. Lets all strive to be “children of the burning heart.

Blessings,

Pastor

How to Make Deviled Ham (II)

An appeaser is

In order to make Deviled Ham you have to get rid of good and also you have to “un-invite” or “dis-invite” Christ from your community.
In the Gospel of Luke, the community could live with a crazy, naked man living in their cemetery, but Jesus Christ had to go. And by doing this, they threw out the only hope their community had for redemption.

We are seeing the same course of action being taken in our communities as well. What is wrong with our nation is not so much the presence of drugs and alcohol abuse or the violence and crime. What is wrong is that there is no Christ and no Christian presence in our communities to offer hope and healing. Real believers are MIA. The ones remaining were neutered long ago, so they don’t act like real believers. Even as I write this, poor little baby Jesus is being kicked off main street on His birthday as though He was loitering. We have become so accustomed to evil and it’s presence, we no longer speak out against it. It many cases it has become illegal to speak out against evil and point the way to redemption.

Have we really made real peace with evil? Will our pact hold? During the years of World War II and the Cold War, there was a word for this — appeasement. Appeasement described the efforts of peace at any cost and of accepting evil. This is what Israel has tried to do … give land for peace. It hasn’t work, nor will it work.

In 1938, Britain and France, still trying to recover from World War I, signed the Munich Pact, which basically said they would accept Germany’s take over of part of Czechoslovakia, as long as Germany agreed not to take any other territory. The policy became known as appeasement, and it didn’t work. Germany eventually took over most of Czechoslovakia, and then a few months later, swept into Poland. World War II began shortly after.

We are in a spiritual warfare. We will never win through appeasement… by accepting the unacceptable. We win our spiritual warfare by standing firm in our faith.

How to Make Deviled Ham (I)

infinite - Einstein

I don’t have anything against deviled ham. It is not a part of my diet but a lot of other folks eat it on a regular basis. Jesus made a batch of deviled ham on the eastern shores of Galilee one afternoon. I simply want to offer up the steps used to make it. Although Jesus didn’t start the process, He certainly finished it. Listen as Luke recounts the story.

Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time.” Luke 8:26-27

Luke recalled that this man “had demons for a long time”. In reality, there is only one “devil”, but there are many “demons.” The Bible speaks of demon possession rather matter-of-factly, without apology or excuse. While some would like to say this man was not possessed, but simply insane or troubled… Jesus sure thought him under demonic control. C.S. Lewis wrote about this confusion in his work called The Screwtape Letters.

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about demons (devils). One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased with both errors …with the same delight.

Our world plays with spiritual forces rather than taking them seriously. Demon possession has become a matter for Hollywood rather than the church. We tend to see these things as harmless when they are far from it. The power of the Devil is just as real today as it was in Jesus’ time and we are seeing increased evidence of it. At first glance, you might not think a story like this one has any application to your life…. but it does. While you might not find any association with the man living in the tombs, the society which put him there resembles ours on many levels. So how do you make deviled ham? First, you got to get rid of certain things…

The Absence of Good

Do you know what really scared the people in Luke’s story?

  • Someone possessed?
  • Someone in chains?
  • Someone screaming?
  • Someone cutting themselves?
  • Someone speaking with another voice?
  • Someone running around a graveyard naked?

Luke writes at the end of this story: “When they (the community) came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Amazing! I’ve got to tell you, if I’m walking down the road and some naked man in chains comes out of the cemetery yelling at me… his appearance would unnerve me. But in this story, the locals have become accustomed to his behavior. What frightens them is that this man who was evil, becomes good. What frightens them is the holy, not the unholy.

Doesn’t it strike you as strange that these people were afraid of the right things and comfortable with the wrong things? They were afraid of that which ought to comfort them. They were very much at ease with the very things that ought to haunt them with fear. The scariest thing of all… their story is our story. Because the greatest problem facing our society today is that we have become all too comfortable with evil. At this point, I could throw a lot of statistics at you to prove the point of how our society has changed in the last fifty years. I believe you already now the truth. Bottom-line, our society has grown far too comfortable with evil.

The haunting aspect of Luke’s Gospel is that the people had grown so comfortable with the presence of evil… they were now accommodating it. Here is a man filled with so many demons, his name is Legion. He has an army of demons living inside him. Luke talks about him as being a frightening and dangerous individual…. so much so that the community had to chain him hand and foot. It appears people in the community simply took turns watching over him. No one was bothered by the job. They were so comfortable with these situations that now what really frightened them was the freeing presence of Christ.

In the Old Testament the prophet Jeremiah talked about the spiritual condition of his generation. Their lifestyles too were so degenerated the cities were filled with crime. Jeremiah looked around at them and said, “Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush.” (Jeremiah 6:15)

Ouch! That sounds like our culture. There is something missing in our society. We have no shame. We are so accepting of the behavior and the lifestyles of the immoral we too have forgotten how to blush.

So the first-step to making “deviled ham” is to get rid of the good in life and grow comfortable with evil.

Pastor

How to Exit a Storm

Faith Is

Have you ever been so scared that you weren’t sure what action to take next? How do you handle the storms of life? This was the situation which a little boy found himself. He had diligently rehearsed for his role in the Easter play. His one line was, “It is I, be not afraid.” He kept saying it over and over again to himself. “It is I, be not afraid.
On the day of the program he was a nervous wreck. His stomach churned as his teacher reviewed the line with him one more time backstage. Finally he stepped in front of the glaring spotlights and peered out at the silhouettes of dozens of faces. He panicked and his mind went blank. Finally he blurted out, “It’s me, and I’m scared to death.

How do you get out of a storm? If I had been one of the disciples, I think I would have pondered several solutions:

Row Your Way Out

Far too often, when we get into the storms of life, we expend all sorts of energy and effort to physically man-handle the situation. In other words, we use our own human effort to move us beyond the storm’s reach. But, when it is God who orchestrates the storm… there is nothing we can do to help. If increased faith is what the Father is looking for in our lives, then human solutions will only increase our time in the eye of the storm… and increase our frustration level.

Ride It Out – SURVIVE!

Some have wrongly concluded, “If I just sit still and try not to worry, maybe the storm will go away. Hang tough until it is over.” The old saying goes, “This too, shall pass.” But if the purpose of the storm is to increase our faith, how will this help?

Religious Your Way Through It!

Prayer is always a good option, unless you already have your word of faith which you are supposed to be standing upon. You can do all those religious things others have done… but the storm continues to rage. Here is what Job concluded somewhere in the middle of his storm. Maybe you have been there.

Behold, I go forward, but He is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive Him: On the left hand, where He doth work, but I cannot behold him: He hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see Him.” Job 23:8,9

You know, there will always be times when we may not feel like God is near. It is in those times when we can’t feel God’s presence that we need to trust Him.

Jesus later asked the disciples about the “location” of their faith? Jesus sure knows how to get to the heart of the matter. It is interesting to know that our faith goes somewhere. Has your faith ever dissipated in the middle of a storm?

I quoted verses 8 and 9 of Job 23, but verse 10 is the verse I really like. Job said, “But He knows the way that I take: when He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”  This is the way to view and survive a storm. We need to realize God is making gold. He is not making tin foil or using Lego’s. God is refining gold! In a sense, Job was saying, “Come whatever, I’m still going to trust God and be gold.

Why Does God Always Wait Until the Last Moment?

One of my favorite quotes is: “God may not be early, but He is never late.” How could He just sleep peacefully as all hell broke loose around Him? How could Jesus repeatedly hit the snooze button? I have asked my kids in the past how they could sleep so soundly during an overnight storm. “Was there a storm?” they would ask.

Why didn’t the Lord come to their aid? Because the only way our faith will be increased is when we realize that God has already given us the solutions to our storms. He wants us to learn that while we might be able to row our way out or ride out the storm, it is much easier to trust and lean upon His last words first!

The lesson Jesus would have us all learn is THE WORD WORKS, BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK YOUR WORD! The disciples had seen Jesus “the Word” heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out devils. But on this day Jesus wanted them to learn how to believe the word for themselves.

  • To do the word is to live beyond the dictates of circumstances.
  • To do the word is to act like God told the truth even when it looks like He didn’t.
  • Doing the word does not ignore the circumstances…. it just looks beyond them to something greater… God’s promises to you.

“Let us go over to the other side.”

If they had been believing the word, when the storm came they would have just lifted their hands and their voices and said, “Praise God we’re going over… come hell or high water we’re going over.”

In the end, these fearful disciples decided to wake-up the Word when their faith failed. They woke Jesus (the Word) up from His nap. Have you ever had a word go to sleep on you? Sometimes our only course is to “wake up our words.” For you and I today, this means to stir up that Word, begin to read the word, confess the word, and to praise God according to His word.

The disciples first accused the Word of not caring about them or the storm. But the word cared! The Lord always cares, more than we will ever know. The Word already knew the truth. The only thing Jesus could do after He calmed the storm was to ask… “Where is your faith?”  Sink, swim, pass or fail… we must locate our faith. Being real here… the only thing I usually think about is getting out of the storm.

Where is your faith?

  • Is it in the fair weather?
  • Is it in the boat?
  • Is it in your own abilities?
  • Is it in other people?

People who truly believe the Word are peculiar people to the world. Even many Christians find “word believing Christians” strange folk. They are from the Island of Misfit Toys. Why? These folks are always talking about their words and what God has spoken… even while the storm rages. These folks talk about their destination rather than their circumstances. Our destination is determined, but we must be determined to reach our destination.

Ann Beck of North Carollton, Mississippi, talks about the days when her husband and she taught two and three year old children in Sunday school. A Bible verse they helped the preschoolers memorize was Psalms 56: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” Their preschool son, Mark, was one of their pupils.

Well, one stormy night, as lightning flashed and thunder boomed, the electricity suddenly went off. “I’m not afraid,” Mark assured his parents as they groped in the dark for candles and matches. Expecting him to quote the Bible verse he recently learned, Ann Beck proudly prompted him, “And tell us why you aren’t afraid.

Little Mark simply replied, “Cause I’ve got my flashlight.

Who needs the Lord when you have a flashlight?

Following Jesus Will Ultimately Lead to Stormy Situations

Turn My Troubles Over to God

If you set your heart and mind on following Jesus, the storms of life will arise for two reasons.

The Devil Is Real!

If you begin to do the will of God, the devil is not going to let you grow unhindered. He will attempt to throw everything into your boat, including the kitchen sink. He wants to sink your ship and have you blame God at the same time. He is the master distracter.  The Bible gives him two job descriptions. When scripture uses the word “devil” to describe him, it usually is referring to him being a tempter. When scripture uses the word “Satan” to describe him, it usually is referring to him being an accuser.  He won’t appear in a puff of smoke in front of you in order to scare you. He has no interest in this activity. He wants to make the lives of God’s people miserable. If you are not enduring some of his antics, then you are not even worth attacking. Get busy, because I need some relief.

God Seeks to Demonstrate His Faithfulness and

Strengthen Your Own Personal Faith.

As I said yesterday, it was Jesus who led the disciples into the boat. Evidently, He led them there with the very purpose of strengthening their faith. How do we know? Faith was the issue on His mind once the event concluded. This wasn’t a demonic encounter. No, they will all experience one once they reach the other side of the lake. Instead, this event was carefully designed and orchestrated by God to increase their faith.

By the way – since this lesson didn’t take, do you think these fearful disciples will have to undergo a similar test again? Yes, Jesus will later allow them to be treated in the same fashion, only next time He will walk on the water and leave the disciples struggling on their own.

If we neglect our lessons… we will face them again down the road. I hear believers say all the time… “I’m tired of having to face the same temptations and trials over and over.” Life has become a “Spiritual Groundhog Day” for them. If you are truly tired of it, then learn and grow. It is the quickest way out! The Lord is not trying to hurt or hinder us… He is attempting to create opportunities for us to grow. We need to remember the Lord’s word and the Lord’s presence go together. If you get one, you automatically get the other. Jesus was on-hand or nearby on both occasions.  You are never alone.

Blessings,

Pastor
